What is best fabric for kids or pets?

A question we hear almost daily is, “What is the best fabric for families with kids and pets?”  I like to respond with “nothing stops jaws and claws!” But that isn’t the real answer because all fabrics are NOT created equal – some are better than others!

Microfiber:

  • Advantages: Microfiber is a synthetic fabric known for its durability and resistance to stains. It is easy to clean and maintain. The tight weave of microfiber helps prevent spills from penetrating the fabric.
  • Considerations: While microfiber is generally stain-resistant, it may not be completely impervious to all stains. Some varieties may also attract pet hair, so it’s advisable to choose a microfiber with a texture that minimizes this issue.

Crypton Fabric:

  • Advantages: Crypton is a performance fabric known for its stain resistance, moisture resistance, and durability. It has a protective barrier that makes it easy to clean and resistant to spills.
  • Considerations: Crypton fabrics are available in a range of textures and patterns, making them suitable for various design preferences. They are often used in homes with active lifestyles.

Sunbrella:

  • Advantages: Sunbrella is a brand known for outdoor fabrics, but it’s also used indoors. It is water-resistant, fade-resistant, and easy to clean. Sunbrella fabrics are often used in homes with pets and children due to their durability.
  • Considerations: Sunbrella fabrics are available in a variety of colors and patterns, allowing for design versatility. They are also resistant to mold and mildew.

Leather:

  • Advantages: Leather is a durable and easy-to-clean option, making it suitable for households with kids and pets. It can withstand spills and can be wiped clean easily. Over time, leather develops a patina that can add character.
  • Considerations: While leather is durable, it may scratch, especially with pets. Some people appreciate the natural aging of leather, while others may prefer a more pristine appearance.

Performance Velvet:

  • Advantages: Performance velvet is a durable and stain-resistant option that offers a luxurious look and feel. It can withstand spills and is relatively easy to clean.
  • Considerations: Velvet fabrics may show imprints and can be prone to crushing over time. Performance velvet is often treated to resist stains and is a more practical choice for active households.

Denim:

  • Advantages: Denim is a durable and casual fabric that can withstand heavy use. It’s easy to clean and has a relaxed aesthetic.
  • Considerations: Denim may fade over time, especially in areas exposed to sunlight. However, some people appreciate the worn-in look that denim develops.
