Mixing Metals in interior design

Can I mix metal finishes in my home?

Of course! Mixing metals in home design is a popular and effective way to add visual interest, depth, and a touch of eclecticism to your space – and everyone is doing it right now! Sticking to a single metal finish was once a common guideline, but contemporary design embraces the notion that a harmonious blend of metals can create a stylish and dynamic look. Here are some tips for successfully mixing metals in your home:

Choose a Dominant Metal:

Start by choosing one metal as the dominant or primary finish. This metal can be used for larger fixtures, furniture, or elements that you want to stand out.

Consider the Undertones:

Pay attention to the undertones of the metals you are using. For example, some metals may have warm undertones (such as gold or brass), while others have cool undertones (such as chrome or silver). Mixing metals with similar undertones often creates a more cohesive look.

Maintain Consistency:

Aim for a sense of consistency in terms of the overall style or theme of your space. Consistency in design elements, color palette, or style can help the mixed metals feel intentional rather than haphazard.

Use Accents and Accessories:

Start by incorporating mixed metals through smaller accessories, such as decorative objects, lighting fixtures, or hardware. This allows you to experiment with the combination without committing to larger pieces.

Consider Finishes:

Mix metals with different finishes for added dimension. For example, matte black can pair well with polished nickel or brushed brass. The contrast in finishes contributes to a visually appealing design.

Balance Throughout the Space:

Distribute mixed metals throughout the space to create balance. Avoid clustering all of one metal finish in a single area, as this can make the combination seem disjointed.

Follow the 80/20 Rule:

Aim for a balance of around 80% of one metal and 20% of the other(s). This provides a dominant metal that grounds the design while allowing room for other finishes to complement and accent.

Consider the Room’s Function:

Think about the function of the room and the atmosphere you want to create. Some metals may contribute to a more formal or elegant look, while others can create a more casual or eclectic vibe.

Experiment and Trust Your Instincts:

Interior design is a creative process, so feel free to experiment with different metal combinations. Trust your instincts and choose combinations that appeal to you personally.

Remember that design rules are not strict, and personal taste plays a significant role. Mixing metals can be a fun and creative way to express your style and make your home uniquely yours.
