What Size Rug Should I Have?

Choosing the right size rug for a room depends on several things, including the dimensions of the room, the layout of furniture, and your design preferences. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine the appropriate rug size for different rooms:

Living Room:

  • Large Living Rooms: In a spacious living room, consider a rug that accommodates all key pieces of furniture. Ideally, the rug should extend under the front legs of sofas and chairs, unifying the seating area. If your budget allows, a rug large enough to encompass all furniture is even better.  Big rugs offer a warm and comfortable feel.
  • Smaller Living Rooms: In smaller living rooms, you may opt for a smaller rug that sits in the center of the seating arrangement, with the front legs of the furniture on the rug. This helps define the seating area without overwhelming the space.

Dining Room:

In the dining room, the rug should be large enough to accommodate the dining table and chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. Ensure that the rug extends beyond the edges of the table to prevent chair legs from catching on the edge when people are seated or moving their chairs.

Bedroom:

Under the Bed: In the bedroom, a common rule is to choose a rug that extends at least 18-24 inches beyond the sides of the bed. This provides a soft surface for your feet when getting out of bed. You can also opt for a larger rug that includes the entire bed and nightstands.

Front of the Bed: Alternatively, you can use smaller rugs on either side or at the foot of the bed, leaving the majority of the bedroom floor uncovered.

Hallways and Entryways:

In hallways and entryways, choose a rug size that complements the shape and dimensions of the space. A runner can be an excellent choice for hallways, while a larger rug can anchor the entryway and set the tone for the rest of the home.

Always remember to measure your space and the furniture layout before purchasing a rug. It’s essential to find a size that not only fits the room but also complements the overall design aesthetic. If in doubt, larger rugs that encompass the main furniture pieces tend to create a more cohesive and visually appealing look.
